Compact Cosmos

2 3 GREATWALLSANDVOIDS seriously largescale structures Our journey begins at the edge of the observable universe, some 14 billion lightyears away. Out here on the perimeter of the known the universe resembles a froth of bubbles. The bubbles themselves are mindnumbing expanses of virtually nothing, near empty voids that stretch for hundreds of millions of lightyears. Surrounding the voids are immense walls, glowing aggregates made up of vast numbers of galaxies. The walls are of awesome proportions, huge networks inter connected by galactic filaments and sheets that stretch across the firmament. Estimated at 3.5 billion lightyears long,by 2.5 billion wide and 50 million thick, the Centaurus Wall opposite is one of several that form the largest structures so far discovered.
